Canoe Race Rules

  • Two contestants for each canoe. They must remain as a team for the duration of the race, in the same canoe as started with. Contestants must be from the same age division.

  • Each race craft must be propelled exclusively by paddle power (single blade) while on the water. No rowing configuration is permitted.

  • No sail or kite is permitted.

  • For any "shortcut" to be legal, it must have a flow of river water through it. Overland portages are not allowed.

  • Canoes and paddles will be provided and will be assigned randomly by lottery. Use of personal canoes is not permitted.

  • Contestants are required to provide for themselves a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device and said device must be easily accessible.

  • Except for those portages specified by the race committee, canoes must remain in the river. All illegal portaging will disqualify the team. There will be checkers along the riverbank at unspecified points.

  • No one is allowed to help convey a contestant or his equipment although the contestant may pick up food, water, or extra paddles during the race.

  • Prior to a race, no contestant will touch or move any other contestant's canoe or equipment without permission.

  • If any doubt exists to the physical condition of the contestants, the race committee reserves the right to demand a physical examination.

  • Racers may not hinder another racer or boat in any way. No boat-to-boat or person-to-person contact will be allowed. Violation of this rule may result in disqualification. Final decision to made by the judges and cannot be appealed.

  • Water balloons and squirt guns are not only allowed, but encouraged! However, no water balloon propulsion devices will be allowed.
